Last year NHBC launched its first-ever apprenticeship scheme, as the industry began to recover from the pandemic, when it became an Education and Skills Funding Agency-approved provider. The apprenticeships are delivered by the dedicated Training team whose qualified tutors have decades of construction and coaching experience between them.
We welcomed the first cohort to our Construction Site Supervisor (CSS) apprenticeship in September, which has been designed with industry-leading employers to reflect their specific and bespoke needs.
We spoke with one of the first apprentices to sign up – Redrow and London Scottish professional Nick Selway.
The hooker - who has been involved in Championship level rugby for the last 10 years – enrolled on the NHBC scheme last Autumn, having been a bricklayer before turning professional.
“I have enjoyed every minute of the scheme so far and it provides a good contrast with my on the field activities. I’ve always been interested in construction and have worked on sites in the past."

It can be hard work, combining learning at home, with work on-site along with rugby training and keeping myself in shape but it is definitely worth it. Regardless of anyone’s background or career history, the NHBC Apprentice scheme is without doubt worth pursuing should you have an interest in house-building and construction.”
NHBC’s Head of Training and Analysis, Darryl Stewart added: “It is really pleasing to hear of Nick’s progress which shows that people from many different backgrounds can succeed within the sector. We look forward to training more builders of the future who will commit to high standards throughout their careers and wish Nick all the best with his career at Redrow.”
I’ve enjoyed the course and I really liked the mix of one-to-one support and the chance to learn on your own.
It’s been great and the NHBC assessors very helpful. The online learning portal has been easy to use and is where we can upload examples of our work and complete tests and coursework.
I have enjoyed learning about the house-building processes. It’s filled so many gaps I had in my knowledge and it’s good to now be able to walk around the site being able to apply this new knowledge in reality.
