Technical Specialist

Salary: £29,500 - £52,000 (depending on experience) +6% performance bonus

Working location: Milton Keynes/Home based

Employment type: 12 months FTC / full time

Job summary:

The Standards, Innovation and Research (SIR) department is a strategic hub for Technical Risk Management (TRM) for NHBC, focused on thought leadership including stakeholder engagement to develop and deliver technical standards, guidance, research and competency to enhance our technical expertise. You will join technical quality team within SIR.

What you’ll be doing

The role is located within one of the Standards, Innovation and Research teams to deliver on the key purposes of the department:

  • Technical Research: Horizon scanning to help inform the wider business and mitigate future technical risk to the NHBC
  • Innovation: Identification and safe delivery of new construction concepts/systems/processes that increase value for NHBC, customers, consumers and the wider industry.
  • Standards: Produce and evolve technical standards and guidance that mitigates our insurance risk, defines a minimum warranty standard and promotes consistency in application.
  • Technical Competency: To develop and demonstrate the technical competence of our people to regulators, internal stakeholders, and customers.

Responsibilities extend to:

  • Provide expertise to support the maintenance and development of NHBC’s Technical Risk Management Policy.
  • Review, develop, publish and maintain NHBC’s technical positions relating to department purpose.
  • Assist Operations by supporting NHBC’s Technical Risk Management (TRM) processes and procedures for Warranty and Building Regulation compliance.
  • Develop and publish in areas of specialism, internal and external technical information guidance and communications in support of the consistent interpretation of NHBC Standards and Regulatory requirements.
  • Assist in the relationship with builder customers, industry bodies, trade associations and professional institutes within defined area of specialism.
  • Support the resolution of technical issues and enquiries for colleagues and external customers.
  • Delivery of team specific project work.
  • Adherence to role specific Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)

What we’re looking for

  • Relevant construction experience, including the appreciation of home building technology, including modern methods of construction and Statutory Regulations.
  • Credible technically with strong advocacy and communication skills, and an enquiring mind
  • Competent user of MS Office suite of software
  • Have good technical knowledge and experience with house building/construction, NHBC standards, Building Regulations, procedures and structure.
  • Appreciation of industry competence requirements
  • Educated to a minimum RQF level 4  
  • Sound and appropriate levels of technical knowledge to enable sufficient understanding of customer needs and requirements.
