We wanted to commit to a cause that is more closely aligned with our social purpose and work with an organisation that provides education, training and support to people with real housing issues. After a colleague vote, our corporate charity was named as Crisis, in May 2019.
Our colleagues in 7 teams completed 19 million steps– that’s more than 8,000 miles to raise funds for our charity partner Crisis.
A big thank you to the NHBC volunteers from Technical Operations, who assisted the Crisis team with a range of activities in London this week.
Our values are at the core of how we work together. We have career opportunities right across the UK and are committed to creating an inclusive culture that encourages everyone to bring their true selves to work.

The Armed Forces Covenant acknowledges that those who serve or who have served in the armed forces, and their families, should be treated with fairness and respect in the communities, economy and society they serve. Our Silver Award recognises that we do not disadvantage service personnel during our recruiting process. We uphold a positive stance towards employees, offering flexibility to Reservists so they can fulfil their annual training and mobilisation commitments.
The UK Government’s Department for Work and Pensions developed the Disability Confident scheme to support employers to make the most of the talents people with disabilities and long-term health conditions can bring to the workplace. The scheme encourages employers to think differently about how they employ and retain disabled and neuro-diverse people. As a signatory of the scheme, NHBC is committed to disability inclusion in the workplace.
As part of our continued commitment to creating an inclusive workplace for all we have signed up to become Diversity Champion’s with Stonewall. Stonewall are part of a vibrant global movement for change made up of LGBTQ+ people, our allies, families and friends, fighting for freedom, for equity and for potential.
NHBC has joined with over 900 employers in signing up to the Race at Work Charter, an initiative designed for businesses to collectively commit to improving equal opportunities for Black, Asian, Mixed Race and ethnically diverse employees in the UK. Launched in 2018, the Race at Work Charter builds on the work of the 2017 McGregor-Smith Review, which found that people from these ethnically diverse backgrounds are still underemployed, underpromoted and under-represented at senior levels. The Race at Work Charter is composed of seven principal calls to action and signing up means taking practical steps to ensure we are tackling barriers that ethnic minority people face in recruitment and progression.
PurpleSpace is the world’s only networking and professional development hub for disabled employees, network and resource group leaders and allies from all sectors and trades. NHBC has joined its membership as we are committed to building disability confidence from the inside out.
