Working location: Lichfield Training Hub, with travel required depending on business needs

Employment type: Full time, Permanent

Job summary:

We’re looking for a skilled Groundworks Technician to join NHBC’s Apprenticeship Training Hub. You’ll play a key part in helping apprentices learn the fundamentals of groundwork, from site prep and concreting to drainage and kerb laying. This is a practical, hands-on role where you’ll use your trade experience to keep the hub running smoothly, ensure materials and equipment are ready, and guide learners as they develop their skills. If you take pride in your craft and enjoy helping others progress, this could be the ideal next step for you.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Preparing and maintaining groundwork areas for training sessions, ensuring materials and tools are available and ready to use.
  • Assisting in practical demonstrations and supporting apprentices as they carry out tasks such as concreting, drainage, and other groundworks activities.
  • Independently leading hands-on training when senior trainers are delivering classroom sessions.
  • Building and maintaining example structures for learners to follow during practical training.
  • Ensuring all equipment, materials, and work areas meet health and safety standards.
  • Keeping the training hub tidy, safe, and well organised, including managing stock and ordering new materials when needed.
  • Recording apprentice progress and supporting assessments where required.
  • Acting as a First Aider and Fire Marshal, maintaining safe working conditions across the hub.
  • Responsible for the cleanliness and appearance of the training hub, ensuring a safe working environment for both learners and staff. This will include controlling materials, hazardous substances, and deliveries while maintaining safe access and segregation. The role also involves supervising the use of equipment, including power tools, and monitoring and enforcing PPE standards throughout the facility.
  • Responsible for general maintenance of the centre and tools.
  • Reporting and recording breaches of health and safety and conduct that may be used for any further action deemed necessary.
  • Preparing classrooms and practical working areas for exams, other training, and presentations to internal/external bodies.
  • Undertaking any further duties required in support of other training activities taking place at the training hub or as directed by your manager or senior trainers.

What we’re looking for:

  • Solid experience working in groundworks within the housebuilding or construction industry.
  • Strong understanding of groundwork techniques such as excavation, concreting, drainage, and foundation work.
  • Confident using and maintaining groundwork tools and equipment safely.
  • Organised, proactive, and able to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Level 2 qualification (or higher) in Groundworks or a related trade, plus a full driving licence.
  • (Desirable) Experience mentoring or training others, with a genuine interest in developing apprentices.

What we offer

Our benefits package includes:

  • 27 days annual leave + bank holidays
  • holiday purchase scheme
  • enhanced pension scheme (up to 10.5%)
  • life assurance
  • subsidised private medical insurance
  • employee discounts platform
  • two days volunteer leave
  • enhanced maternity, paternity, adoption leave and pay for all new parents

+ many more!
