Liam Fisher

Like many young people Liam was looking for a rewarding career with room to grow and develop. After beginning his journey in construction as a bricklayer he is now working as an Assistant Site Manager at Taylor Wimpey and undertaking the Construction Site Supervisor (CSS) apprenticeship.

Background:

After attending college to study A Levels and initially considering moving on to university, Liam looked at alternative career paths. He considered the army but decided to join the construction industry thanks to getting an interview with Taylor Wimpey.

Considering construction as a career

The house-building industry offers a wide range of rewarding roles ranging from design to finance or marketing to management, as well as a variety of trades including brickwork, carpentry, groundworks and more. It is also a sector which offers plenty of development opportunities and the chance to progress.

That is why the CSS apprenticeship is an excellent opportunity for individuals to build on their existing knowledge, while also developing new skills to expand their career prospects.

Liam said “I knew a bit about the construction sector as I do have some family and friends within the industry. I was attracted to this option as I had been on sites by this point and this made me realise that I wanted to pursue the trade of bricklaying as my first role in construction. I understood that it takes a lot of practice to develop this skill, so an apprenticeship seemed like the best option.”

The advantages of apprenticeships

Created in collaboration with industry experts and leading house builders, the Level 4 CSS apprenticeship offers dedicated online learning days that cover a range of modules. The apprenticeship also allows for plenty of time on site to apply learning, understand how different aspects work in practice and ensure homes are built to the highest quality standards.

As someone who has experienced apprenticeships at different levels, including the Level 4 CSS apprenticeship with NHBC, we asked Liam about how he feels they have benefited him.

He said “I would recommend construction to anybody as it’s a rewarding and well-paid career and I’m proud to have got started with an apprenticeship in brickwork. Every aspect of my current CSS apprenticeship has helped in my working environment and I think there needs to be more accessibility to apprenticeships generally. I believe the demand and the awareness are there; looking back I think I was lucky to get the chance to do mine and I’d like more people to have the same opportunity.”

Looking ahead:

We asked Liam about his time in the house-building industry so far, his apprenticeship and future plans.

Liam said “Taylor Wimpey have been very supportive in my learning and development. I am very happy as an Assistant Site Manager as I feel like there is still a lot to learn. Eventually I would love to manage my own site or become part of a design team. I love to keep learning as the industry evolves and I’m excited to see the high standard of the homes we produce.”

Kelly Canfield, Future Talent Development Manager at Taylor Wimpey added “Apprenticeships are a great way for people to get into the house-building industry and, as is the case with Liam, keep learning new skills, progress in their careers and take on new roles and responsibilities. Construction offers so many opportunities and I’m proud that here at Taylor Wimpey we’re able to support apprenticeships that build rewarding careers and much-needed new homes.”
