Operational Risk Officer

Salary: £48,000 - £53,000 (depending on experience) + 6% performance bonus 

Working location: Milton Keynes, Hybrid working (2 days in Office)

Employment type: full time, permanent

Job summary:

Join NHBC’s Risk and Compliance team in a high-impact Second Line role and build a strong foundation in operational and non-financial risk. As an Operational Risk Officer, you will work closely with senior risk leaders to provide effective oversight and constructive challenge to the business, supporting informed risk-taking and the consistent embedding of the Risk Management Framework across the First Line. This role offers broad exposure to key projects, business proposals, and group-wide initiatives, making it an excellent opportunity to grow your expertise and help shape how NHBC delivers its purpose

What you’ll be doing

As a key member of the Operational Risk Management team, this position will involve:

  • Provide oversight and challenge of operational risk incidents, ensuring timely capture, escalation, root cause analysis, and effective remediation by the First Line.
  • Supporting the Operational Risk Manager to embed NHBC’s operational risk framework, working closely with First Line teams and risk owners to develop and maintain dynamic risk profiles, including risk and control assessments and indicators.
  • Coordinating with business and risk owners on specific key elements of NHBC’s risk management policy framework, to ensure appropriate policies and procedures support the management of non-financial risk.
  • Support operational risk monitoring and reporting to committees by consolidating and analysing the risk profile, assessing exposure against risk appetite and tolerances, and using multiple data sources to inform and challenge risk insights.
  • Support and assist in completing any required assurance testing and thematic reviews.
  • Act as secretariat for the Non-Financial Risk Committee, chaired by the Head of Operational Risk, including the development of agendas, collation of papers, minuting discussions and tracking of actions.

What we’re looking for

  • Problem-solver with the ability to challenge and question established practices and contribute to the development of new processes.
  • Previous risk management experience gained with general insurance or within the financial services sector, construction sector or another industry with a strong risk management ethos.
  • An understanding of governance, risk and control frameworks.
  • Experience in operational risk management from a First or Second Line of Defence perspective.
  • Risk management qualification or working towards operational risk certification i.e. Degree/ Higher/ Other.
  • Results orientated, motivated to meet goals and ensure high quality in every aspect.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills that enable collaboration.
  • Good written communication skills.
  • Numerate and analytical.
  • Excellent IT skills, in particular MS Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
  • Hybrid working, 2 days in office.
