This year’s Pride in the Job awards were extra special for Eddie Hawes, who not only secured a Quality Award for his own site but also celebrated his son Gavin winning one too. Working for different builders and recognised in different categories, the father-and-son duo have each made their mark on the industry. With decades of experience behind him, Eddie reflects on his own journey in construction.

Video transcript

Hi, my name is Eddie McCann, I work for Robertson Homes and my site is Meadowside at Bo'ness.

I was absolutely delighted to win a Quality Award this year for myself and for my team.

I started over 40 years ago as an apprentice joiner with George Wimpey. Through the years I've worked with various companies as a site manager. I've been doing it for over 27 years.

I'm really proud that Gavin won an award this year, an achievement not many people can have. My son works in the trade as well as me. We help each other if we have a problem or something, maybe phone each other and find out if we can help each other, but that very rarely happens, as he is his own man.

My biggest challenge this year on site was moving services, diverting a water service which took a lot of time to move.

It's not just for me, it's for the whole team. I can't do it without them. If they weren't there, I would never have an award. It's a team award, not just for me.
