James Howells: NHBC's Apprenticeship Scheme

We spoke with James Howells about joining the construction sector, what motivated him to pursue the Level 4 Construction Site Supervisor (CSS) apprenticeship through NHBC, and what he hopes to achieve in the future. 

Background:   

James had set his sights on joining the construction sector from an early age. Whether he was operating a small digger on his Grandad’s land in Devon during his summer holidays or helping friends on personal building projects in his spare time, he always knew he wanted to be part of this industry. 

Building a career in construction: 

After joining Watkin Jones in February 2024 James is now a Trainee Site Manager at Grove Crescent and building his skills and knowledge through the CSS apprenticeship. 

James said “I always knew I wanted to get into construction. I really enjoy seeing an empty plot of land transformed into something that gives people a place to live, work and study, as well as create lasting memories. That’s what gives me a real sense of achievement and pride in the work I’m doing.” 

Learning new skills: 

Created in collaboration with industry experts and leading builders, the Level 4 CSS apprenticeship offers dedicated online learning days that cover a range of modules, including construction technology, health and safety, and effective communication. 

The apprenticeship offers learners the chance to broaden their knowledge and develop a range of skills essential for successful site management, such as teamwork and a thorough understanding of the sector. Apprentices also learn how to manage staff and subcontractors, supervise every aspect of the site build and make sure homes are ready for customers to move into. 

Looking to the future:   

We asked James about his future career plans. He explained “At the moment I’m now over nine months into my apprenticeship. I’m learning a lot; the course structure is clear, informative and the feedback on each submission has been positive and clearly explained. The structure of the training, combined with the support I’ve received from both NHBC and Watkin Jones, has been key in helping me understand site management.”  

“Once I’ve completed this Level 4 apprenticeship the next step for me would be to become a full Assistant Site Manager and, from there, eventually move on to the role of Site Manager. One of the many things I value about working in construction is that there are lots of opportunities to learn new things and plenty of different routes you can take to progress in your career.”
