What does a typical day in your role at NHBC look like and what do you enjoy most about your job?
In my role as an NHBC building inspector, I serve as a vital link between regulatory compliance and the customer’s construction team. By working closely with site managers and teams, I ensure that projects meet all necessary standards while fostering an environment of collaboration and continuous improvement. Engaging in trade discussions helps promote understanding and excellence in construction practices on site whilst also guiding sites to become Pride in the Job Award winning site managers and teams.
How do you collaborate with builders or site managers during inspections?
I communicate directly with site managers about my findings and quite often contract managers and construction directors, addressing any non-compliance issues and any queries they may have about them.
I also provide guidance on best practices and engage with tradespeople and site teams about techniques and materials. I also help the site teams understand how to meet NHBC Standards effectively and with the best possible outcome that doesn’t affect the quality of the build.
I schedule follow-up visits known as intermediates to ensure that previously identified issues have been resolved and that work is progressing correctly. I sometimes lead Trade Talk training sessions for site teams on regulatory changes, quality standards and safety practices to help upskill the site teams and sub-contractors.
What attracted you to NHBC and how does working here compare to your previous experiences in the industry?
My brother left self-employment to work for NHBC many years ago and seeing his work life balance was a real attraction for me. I had been a self-employed Master Craftsmen Level 3 Bricklayer for 26yrs, often working from 8am to 10pm and with all the challenges that being self-employed brings. I decided to take the plunge into working for someone else and ultimately joined NHBC. It was the best decision I ever made I now have a great work life balance.
What’s one project or achievement you’re particularly proud of since joining NHBC?
My main achievement since working with the NHBC is my self-worth and confidence, knowing I do a great job for the NHBC. I have also gained my NVQ Level 6 in Senior Site Management and also my Registered Building Inspector status that I need to do the work I am employed to do. I have gained my professional membership with CABE and just recently I have completed an external course on becoming a mental health first aider.
How does NHBC support your professional development and career growth?
NHBC will support you fully if you aspire to progress within the company as I am currently being mentored by one of our Regional Directors with the full support of my line manager.
How would you describe NHBC’s culture and what kind of people thrive in this environment?
Overall, I would say that NHBC attracts and likes motivated, innovative and also collaborative individuals who are looking to implement and improve quality on house-building sites.
What advice would you give to someone considering a career in building inspection?
Things I would advise people wanting a career in inspection to look at working for larger, reputable companies who offer you support and a great work life balance like NHBC does.
