Jonny Hopwood, Senior Technical Building Consultant

What does a typical day in your role at NHBC look like?

Technical building consultants are essentially warranty assessors who oversee many different construction projects. We play a pivotal role in ensuring our customers develop high-quality schemes that comply with NHBC Standards and other relevant codes. My typical day involves various meetings, phone calls and technical reviews for sites across the UK.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Every day presents unique challenges, providing a lot of variety and opportunities to solve problems. My role encourages proactive collaboration with our customers and colleagues, enabling us to build strong relationships and drive the development of high-quality homes.

What attracted you to NHBC and how does working here compare to your previous experiences in the industry?

With a background in architecture, I have had numerous interactions with NHBC and have always been impressed by their commitment to raising standards. When the position of technical building consultant became available, I saw it as an exciting opportunity to join the company in a new role. One significant advantage of my position is its flexibility and hybrid nature, allowing for a mix of field and home working, ensuring a diverse experience each day.

How does NHBC support your professional development and career growth?

NHBC provides comprehensive support and assistance for your professional and career development. You can take advantage of a wide range of training programmes, CPD opportunities and industry events, which ensure that you are always learning and improving. With the right attitude and a willingness to learn, you can go far within the company.

What’s one project or achievement you’re particularly proud of since joining NHBC?

Being involved in the changes to NHBC’s approach to technical risk management has been great to be involved in. This occurred through the implementation of the technical building consultant role, Bespoke Technical Risk Management plans and Joint Virtual Meetings. All of which have helped streamline our approach to technical reviews and risk management, ensuring we continue to improve the quality of house building.

How would you describe NHBC’s culture and what kind of people thrive in this environment?

NHBC is an excellent place to work that truly embodies our core values: Excellent, Progressive, Human and Connected. Within the Technical Operations department, NHBC is the ideal environment for those who thrive on tackling daily challenges and discovering solutions. The company genuinely cares about your best interests and will encourage you to achieve your goals.
